Hey wow. The new installment of Thomas Brinkman's "Soul Center*" is better than the first. It feels he's really hit his stride with this idea. The new one uses a lot of samples of stage patter from live concert albums of the "Soul Center*" era (which, right off the bat seems a path less trod than sampling motown songs). As on the first "Soul Center", there seems to be some kinda "essence of blackness" thing going on, the exact intent of which eludes me. However, rather than dessicating soulful music, it seems this time around he is willing to exploit the drama of the live moments; the roar of the audience heard during call and reponse exchanges gives some of the tracks a massiveness of scale unthinkable in previous Brinkman outings. the way the spoken dialog is edited is often lovely, creating odd moments of poetry, and highlighting the mask worn my certain of the performers. the musicality of the whole thing seems more generous and effective than the first "Soul Center*". kurt --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
